Fade Away by Harlan Coben (1996)

So this book is not a challenged one; every once in a while you have to break from the purpose. I'm trying to pick up some contemporary fiction so I don't have a blank look on my face when people ask me about books that were written since Voltaire was alive. This is a mystery novel that is about a basketball player with a bum knee that makes a comeback to find an old college rival who has disappeared. The only reason I have continued to read this book past the first two chapters is that I believe the author either watched all the Fletch movies for inspiration, or is just a hilariously bad simile writer. A crime fighting ex-basketball player with a debilitating knee injury that is able to become a martial arts expert, work for the FBI, and drinks copious amounts of Yoo-Hoo? New York Times Bestseller? Wow.
